Today I was surfing the Internet while my roommates took a nap and came across a news story that sent my heart into sheer panic. The words “Friendly’s” and “bankruptcy” scrolled across my computer screen. Immediately I flashed back to the many memories I have intertwined with Friendly’s. From savoring the delicious ice cream with my grandmother to eating there for lunch after a fun filled day at the zoo, Friendly’s holds a special place in my heart and I know that I am not the only with. Friendly’s has been serving ice cream since 1935 when it opened its first restaurant during the middle of the Great Depression. It has been stated that Friendly’s is feeling the squeeze from the weak economy and could be filling for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as early as next week. If Friendly’s ends up closing its’ doors another icon in American history will be lost forever. All I know is that when I go home for Columbus Day weekend I will make sure to take a trip the nearest Friendly’s because it could be my last one.
